Aaltoes Silicon Valley Talkoot with Arctic Startup 26.10.-30.10.2009

WHAT?

A week of workshops, startups visits, company excursions, networking events and meetings with interesting people.

An opportunity to meet Stanford University students, Silicon Valley veterans, VCs, lawyers, entrepreneurs and startups, as well as get to know AES and its members better.

The week will be structured so that each day has its own theme.

Monday:
Technology and Teams, How the Stanford’s Technology Transfer system works and how the university supports students’ entrepreneurship ambitions.

Tuesday:
Startups, Visiting Berkeley University and upcoming startups.

Wednesday:
Angels, VCs and Lawyers, What it really takes to get funding for your ideas. Meeting VCs and lawyers to get a look inside their business.

Thursday:
Big companies, exits, What international success looks like. Preliminarily, we’ve planned visits to Google and Microsoft.

Friday:
Summing it all up, Visits to Y-combinator and other interesting forms of support for early stage startups.

There will dinners, parties and networking events (mixers) each evening to meet like-minded people and exchange ideas.

Our trip finishes off on Saturday October 31st, which is Halloween, one of the biggest parties of the year.

WHY?

AES wants to introduce the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Silicon Valley to its members. It’s important to see how business is done in the Valley and to understand how Stanford University plays a role in promotes entrepreneurship and startups.We expect a group of around 40 students and startups to attend.

Arctic Startup is also joining Aaltoes team and startups for the trip. If you’re unfamiliar with AS it’s the best known Finnish startup blog. They will report the phases during the week.

There will be an information evening on Monday 19.10. at 18.00 at the Design Factory for everyone who is signed up to attend.

BOOKING YOUR TRIP

Everyone is responsible for reserving and paying for their own flights and hotels. The trip is open for anyone to join, just make your bookings and inform Krista about which days and events you plan to attend, so that we know when to expect you.

FUNDING

We need everyone’s help to obtain funding for the trip, to make it more affordable for students and entrepreneurs. Flights with KLM, hotels and car rentals will be about 1000€ per person at the present rates (15.9.09).

Contact Kristo Ovaska, if you want to help. You get to keep 25% of the funds you raise for the trip. We also encourage you to use all your school’s available resources for the trip (TaiK, TKK, HSE) – contact Krista about materials for this.

Startups in the TULI program can get funding to cover their trip; if you’re already in the TULI program or are planning to attend one of the upcoming AES Pitch Evenings (8.10. and 19.10), where there is an opportunity to win a place a place in the program and funding to attend the trip. Contact Kristo Ovaska or your school’s (TKK, TaiK, HSE) TULI program coordinator.
